Importing Data from an SQL DB

using FM Server 13 and Filemaker Pro Advanced 13 on El Capitan

I am trying to get data from an SQL Database using the ODBC Manager from ActualTech, which works really well but is very slow with large data sets.  The problem I have is that my data is growing, I don't need to re-import the data I have already imported just the latest records since the last import, which is what I can work out how to do.  There are over 500k records which are basically event logs, so they will not change over time.

I'm guessing I need to do some work in the Query builder which is new to me, or perhaps I could to it in Filemaker but I'm guessing SQL with be more efficient with time.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
