ODBC/SQL XML Data Type

I'm using ODBC to connect to a MSSQL instance. Using ESS to display tables/layouts etc.

This works fine with dozens of tables and their respective fields, but now I'm looking at a specific table that has 6 fields of type 'bit', and then one with type 'xml' (see attached screen shot). When I view these fields in SQL Studio Management I can see all the XML, but when I try and view this table using ESS (in Filemaker) I only see the 'bit' fields, not the 'xml' field.

Is this a limitation of ODBC / ESS in Filemaker? I've tried using ExecuteSQL to grab the data based upon the field name, but still no joy.
