Variable with ~ as part of the name

I am stumped on a item in a sample database and would like help in understanding it.  The code is:

      ~class = Case (
      PatternCount ( n ; "fax" ) ; "Fax" ; PatternCount ( n ; "pager" ) ; "Pager" ; LeftWords ( $sc_thisLine ;1 )

I have no idea what "~class" is.

It is not a field in a table.  It does not conform with the naming convention for a variable.  Probably obvious to others, but I am stumped.
