How are you adding a new record?
I should also mention that I've been using this layout without problems for over a year now. The behavior seems to have changed on its own. I must have done something, but I haven't edited this layout at all in over a year, and I can't figure out what else might have caused this change.
I've tried adding a new record in 3 different ways:
1. Using the new record icon at the top of the screen in table view (the way I usually do it)
2. Using the + icon at the bottom left of the layout in table view
3. Using the new record button at the top of the screen in form view
It's the same behavior in all three cases.
This is one where a copy of your file will sure help. On the web site, if you're replying, in the upper right hand corner of the Reply box is a link for "Use advanced editor". Click that, and attach a copy of the file, if you could.
Copy of the problem layout attached. I've deleted the rest of the database (and a good many records from this layout) for the purposes of uploading, leaving only this layout with its problem. Login as guest needs no password.

I ran recover on the file in FMPA 13 and the resulting .fmp12 file works correctly.
You can set the indexing of the accounts table primary key field to none, create indexes as needed, close the file, open it and set the indexing to all.
This might make the symptom go away but there is no guarantee that it wont crop up again out of the blue.
The file you posted is corrupted and should be rebuilt.
You should probably upgrade to fmp14 as well.
Been using Dropbox by any chance?
Yes! I just started backing up with Dropbox. Is this behavior a known issue with Dropbox? Why would that happen? And if that's the problem, how do I fix it? (Besides never using Dropbox again, sigh.)
Dropbox is known to destroy FileMaker files.
Depends on you're using it though; and what you mean by "backing up with Dropbox".
Details matter here; there are safe ways to use Dropbox; but not with open FileMaker files.
Thank you Bruce.
I started by just saving copies to dropbox, but then recently used it with an open file. (I wanted to access the file from two different computers.) So that's probably what did it.
What's the best course of action from here?
Use OneDrive from Microsoft instead, I believe it sync more "natively".
Rebuild the affected file.
Never use drop box on an open file.
Never let any service ( backup, vscan, dropbox etc) touch an open file.
I would not trust OneDrive either.
Its way to costly in time and effort to rebuild a solution as you will find out.
If you need to make a file available to many workstations use peer to peer sharing or FileMaker server
Thank you coherentkris,
Just installed fmp14 and recovered the file. Totally worked. I suppose it was time to upgrade anyway. And now we're on the path to peer-to-peer sharing also. Not a fun transition, but necessary, and will be better in the end.
Thank you community for such fast and accurate help!
Rebuild. (Start from scratch). Not recover.
