It is not a good idea to try to get FM to replace the Finder.
You could create this function but it would require FM scripting and AppleScript. Getting the original path to the document/folder stored in FM will be difficult/impossible using drag/drop. If you want to open the file from the container and then save any changes back to the container, this may be possible but not recommended.
Essentially clicking the container can export field contents and you can specify the export location. You would then run an AppleScript to open the file with the appropriate app. When done need to drag the file back into the container or maybe some Apple Script to tell FM to import the file back into the container it came from(not sure this is possible myself).
Likely will be buggy and have usability issues if you try it. If you have to ask this question I would suggest not trying.
does not sound to uplifting. however it is a answer. thanks for taking the time.
For file, "Insert File" using "reference only" option make it double clickable.
For folder, it is easy on Windows using "Open URL [ "fiile://path/" ]" but on OSX?
This is pretty easy.
For a single machine create a folder to drop the document into us the Import File routine to store it in a container.
Create a script that imports the new files and add that as a script trigger to the layout.
Creating a field to show the path will tell you where it is
For multiple machines its is pretty much the same but make sur e they have the right to the file path on the server.
User 19752 has the actual best solution if you want to remain the files in place on the machine. I neglected to mention this as you seemed to want the files in FM. Maybe I misunderstood.
great sounds good. I found the "Insert File" and using "reference only"
A novice question. Should I do this as a Button? or?
you should do that as a button A layout driven script trigger here will just be annoying flashing up the dialog to navigate to wherever the film is
Ok I created a Button
I selected "Insert File"
Next I have a chosen single step
I can not find "reference only" but found 'reference" and selected that.
If I now click the button I get:
-This button requires that a field be active. Press Tab or click in a field to make a field active.-
What am I doing wrong here?
Under the "Dialog options" you can select from a drop down in the middle to insert a reference onlt

No big tom,
I want the files to stay in the original location. just a link to it so you can open it from within FMP
You did correct.
Single step shows storage option with menu, then select "Reference" is the same thing that cheking "Reference only" at file selecting dialog.
You need to set one more option that "Go to target field" as your container. (or, if many of container fields in the layout, you can keep setting in button empty for target field, and select field before click the button. then active field is used.)
Thanks, where do find this "Go to target field" option?
