    Portal without parent record

    aknudsen

What is the best/elegant/correct way to create a form with a portal that does not have a parent (no relationships)? I want a typical left side list of items with right side fields.

not sure if I got it right..

without a parent record, there is no child, not portal...

If You want to display anything unrelated:

          - use $$Vars that get their content using sql

          - use a 1:1 (X) relationship

          - create a virtual list, gathering data from its native table

          - etc

A portal by definition displays related records. So what is

First; as mentioned by the others; what you want is impossible.

There is no such thing as a display of related records (a portal) where there is no relationship.

Note that even if in fact, there is only one table in a file, you can still set up a relationship.

              In that case: a self-relationship.

Example: all contacts in the same state; etc.

But almost always, it is helpful to describe what the system is about.

What is represented in this file? People? Products? Tasks?

A catalog of the lies of politicians?

And what real-world thing should be displayed in the portal?

My guess is that aknudsen would like to have a list of items on the left, and on the right the details of the selected item. Since a ListBox (not a dropdown ListBox) doesn't exist in FileMaker, the Portal is the closest object that looks like aListBox.

                  Am I right aknudsen  ?

It can be done with a self join but not otherwise.

a self join IS a relationship.

That is exactly right. I have a list of site codes and each site has several attributes. They also have several relations to other things, so essentially the site code will be the parent record. I guess I could always use a one record company above the site code so I could use the portal, but why add extra data when not needed?

Having used filemaker for a while, mostly for large data parsing, I've used Clarion for the actual development of applications.

Filemaker give me a lot for free when parsing large amount of log files from different network devices such as syslog, firewall logs etc, and being a mac user this makes even more sense.

Power seems endless with the summary and calculations options as fields and much more, but it is way different than "traditional" programming. I have a lot to learn

                          a cartesian relationship.

                            A few details:

To create a Cartesian relationship in your relationship graph, drag from any field in one box to any field in the other. Then double click the relationship line to open a dialog box where you can change the = operator into the x, the Cartesian operator.

And while I wouldn't use it here, list boxes CAN be created and used in FileMaker.
