FileMaker button won't open Word 2016 files on Mac OS X?

I have a FileMaker Pro database that has a number of buttons that link to Word, Excel and PDF documents held on a network server. The links have been set up for both Mac OS and Windows file paths (we work in a cross platform environment) and they work well for Excel, and PDF files on both platforms but only for Word documents on Windows. On Mac OS X (10.11.5 – El Capitan) running Word 2016 the application opens and comes to the foreground but the file doesn’t open.

Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?

The file paths are written in the following format but i don't think this is the issue as the same format works well for PDF's and Excel files.

filemac:/Libraries/QMS/Templates/Project/Design responsibility matrix.dotx

filewin:/R:/QMS/Templates/Project/Design responsibility matrix.dotx

Any help greatly appreciated.
