Can I do from filemaker a query to a MySQL external database without ODBC connection?. I would like to store the result in a field.
Yes, you can use locally or remote hosted PHP to connect and retrieve data from MySQL, then using Insert From URL, pull the data into filemaker.
Thank you, Mike
My advice, as well, Mike! A Web published (with PHP or any web app that can communicate with MySQL) site can be queried this way.
Some sites are set up with "feeds" that publish a downloadable CSV (or other format) file that can be imported into FM, as well. This method (in the reverse) can be used to push from FM to MySQL as well. The web app does the work of creating (or reading) the files. XML format is directly transformable, but JSON files can be written/read as well.
Beverly, can you export a file to a server or are limited to the local device? Especially into FileMaker Go.
OK, that is trickier. The Insert from URL may need to get the data and then you 'parse' from there.
this article by Anders explains:
Is the iOS linked to FMServer? That would be able to perform the "import" of any feeds and you'd see the results in FMGo.
Fairly recently, at least version FM Server 14, the version of PHP that gets installed with FM Server stopped enabling the MySQL hooks that are usually enabled. It is generally best practice to dedicate a server to FM, and let it have it.
Instead of trying to correct that config, I would recommend leaving it as is in case future updates would overwrite it. I would suggest using another server to run PHP scripts. You can also benefit from having more control over the version of PHP used and how it is configured as well.
