After uninstalling FMS14 and before installing FMS15, rename the leftover 'filemaker server' folder. Otherwise some of those leftover files will interfere with the good working of FMS15.
Reboot before installing FMS15. After installing FMS15, move or copy your databases to the new 'databases' folder or wherever you want to host them from.
I always make a copy of the database folder and the scripts folder. Save settings and groups, too. The installation goes very smoothly.
Thank you guys!
When copying or moving the databases, is there a risk in loosing the connection to the containers?
Not as long as you keep the relative position of the folders intact when copying/moving then you are fine.
Thank you sir
i am trying to do the same but...it is a TWO server deployment. The worker machine has a custom SSL Certificate installed.
Which are the steps you think must be done to properly upgrade the 2 servers to FMS 15?
First the Worker ? Should i reinstall the SSL too? Or it will work just setting up an update.?
Any help will be appreciated.
If you follow the installation instructions (Getting Started Guide) p. 25:
For a multiple-machine deployment, you install FileMaker Server software on each machine. After the software is installed on all of the machines, you use the Deployment assistant on the master machine to configure your settings and specify which machine is the worker. You do not use the Deployment assistant on a worker machine.
Hi Beverly, i know that. But it is an upgrade. I mean that those Two servers are installed and running. My question is if i must uninstall them and start from scratch, including the SSL Cert. or there exist a way to just make an upgrade.
And by the way you dont install both machines at the same time. First the Worker and then the Master,
Anyway thank you again for your answer
Hi Beverly, i know that. But it is an upgrade. I mean that those Two servers are installed and running. My question is if i must uninstall them and start from scratch,
Yes. There is no 'upgrade-in-place'. You must first uninstall 14 and then install 15. Note that there is some good info in the FM knowledge base about this, particularly about completely removing or renaming the 'filemaker server' folder that is left after the uninstall.
I was trying to find the kb information on this.
1. backup, backup, backup
2. move backup to somewhere safe.
3. uninstall old
4. install new
Based on the above, I figure I'll need to re-install the SSL certificates. Can I just use my existing certificate files or do I need to generate new ones with a new CSR etc?
I would generate a new CSR and have the cert reissued.
Hi Wim, thx for the reply. Hmm that makes things tricky - this is a production server, and getting an SSL cert takes days in the organisation (it's internally issued). Do you know if there's a way around?
The alternative is to generate the CSR so that it matches the old CSR and then try to import the old cert, but if it fails then you're stuck. Safer to not try it.
Are you using a wildcard cert? That would make it easy .
If you are using virtual machines I would suggest setting up the FMS15 machine on its own and then cutting over to it when it is been fully tested and operational. Instead of removing FMS14 from the existing machine and going to 15 on that same box.
If you use a secondary machine for 15, you can quickly revert back to the 14 machine if something fails.
