Does anyone know if there is a way to limit a user from seeing data in a particular field?
Start with File>Manage>Security
Then go to FM Help to find this page to get started. If I could explain it in short order, I'd try; but I can't.
Thanks so much. I figured it out!
I once set up conditional formatting to turn the text white based on user account class. I can't remember why I did not use security for this. I had a reason.
There still might be reasons not to solve this with Security AN/OR Custom Menu Set.
If though, conditional 'Hide Object' gives more flexibility, is faster to apply and offers several opportunities to show user that he has not the required privileges.
hidden does not prevent it from being set (or read) by script (or external means). Security does prevent any access to the field. You can also encrypt a field (security) and scripted can set/read, but the user cannot interpret the value (unencrypted). You can set up priv. set to limit access (see, but not write, for example).
So it depends on what is really needed.
You can work in Manage Security to accomplish this in a way that works for other users who are assigned the same privilege set. In the definition of the Privilege Set, you can begin with "Custom" and proceed to select the field and define the rules that should apply for View, Create, Edit, Delete, and Field Access too. With the further ability to use "limited ...." when you want to make those rules conditional on anything you can calculate, such as (here's a dumb example) to make the rule to apply only on Thursdays.
I prefer this, not only when the same rule should apply to multiple users but when the same field may exist in other places because it spares you the need to write hide properties and/or conditional formatting that are limited to the specific object instead of applying across the entire database.
