I have a portal made but only pulling in one record/line. I need it to pull in multiple lines. How do I do that?
Assuming that the definition for the relationship is correct: Sometimes, the portal-fields are not fully _inside_ of the portal row -> move them a bit, maybe resize them a bit in height - just to check it out
I noticed if I click on the arrows at the top to move to the next record it will show up but the previous one will be gone. It has to be in some setting I am missing so that is will pull all of this info in for each person.
Highly unlikely, but the number of rows to show could be set to 1.
This is what I have. Where would I set the rows to show??
where it says 7 - doh!
(I did say it was unlikely)
rows seem to be too tall - resize them using the inspector (just select the _fields_ by clicking into a field/select all fields), or enlarge the portal using the inspector (first tab)
As Markus suggests, try making your portal row big enough to show extra space.
This will let you test the theory that the fields might be overlapping or running over the boundaries of the row.
Tried that didn't work.
I actually think this might be due to my relationship as I cannot choose the correct table to but it pulls in the right data
You can place a button on the portal row that will take you to the related record(s) - go to related records, show only related records - so that you can see what should be showing in the portal, according to the relationship you have defined.
I think it is pulling from one table and should be from the other table but it won't let me select the other table in the Portal set up. So frustrating.
If you had the proper relationships set on the graph you would be able to select the right TO for the portal.
You should look at the FileMaker training series parts on relationships and portals. Once you get the basics of FM relationship graph it wont be as frustrating
Check your relationships graph. You might need to add a new "table occurrence".
Note the lack of :: preceding each field in the portal row. These are fields from the Layout's specified table occurrence rather than the portal's.
As you have been advised by others, you need to examine your relationship.
You may need to change your relationships by adding a new table occurrence or you may need to base your layout on a different table occurrence.
Normally, while creating a portal, one defines fields right in the portal-dialog, at least the first few fields. The naming of the portal-relationship is strange as well - leads to problems sooner or later (keep it short, clear)
I would normally expect to see double colons (::) preceding field names in a portal. The fact that they are not there makes me wonder if the fields are correct—the fields in a portal should be from the same TO as the portal itself. It is particularly easy to get this wrong if it is a self-join TO. Suggest you check that.
This might be a stupid question, but since you said you "cannot" select the correct field for the relationship, have you checked the pull-down at the top of the Specify Field dialog?
Thanks for all the help. I figured it out. I think it was relationship issue. I started over just using one table and added a duplicate of that table and BOOM it worked. I am a total newb to FP so yeah I need some training. Anyways I got it to work on a practice file than applied it to my working file and it works! I was also able to bring in the other table and use it as well for some other fields.
