You already described the best process.
Change the containers to store internally. Wait for filemaker to move and update with the new container content, then download the file.
After moving to a new host, reopen the file, and change the settings back.

Thanks Mike, you will save me the extra steps I probably would have gone through.
The only things I’ll add is to make sure you have a current backup before starting the process. Just as a failsafe.
Also, you may want to “compact” the file while you are transferring it. Could save you some disk space and the timing is right.
One more possibility: Download the file from FileMaker Server, open the local file and save a copy as „self-contained copy (single file)“.
Afterwards the Container objects will be embedded in the copy.
Another option is to leave the storage settings as they are, select both the FM file and its associated storage directory folder, compress these and then move the resulting zip file. When unzipped on your new location all should be in place and working.
