I have created an interactive container field in my data base. When I insert a PDF file it immediately opens in Acrobat but Idoes not show up in the data base nor can I open it from the data base.
Thank you for your post.
An interactive Container field and a WebViewer both use the OS WebKit to display information. If you have the Adobe plug-ins present in the Internet Plug-Ins folder, then Adobe Acrobat will launch. Therefore, remove the following two Adobe plug-ins:
Library -> Internet Plug-Ins -> AdobePDFViewer.plugin
Library -> Internet Plug-Ins -> AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
Quit and relaunch FileMaker Pro, open the file, and see if the issue still occurs.
I can find no files by these names on my PC. I do have Adobe Acrobat 8 on my machine.
My apologies for not including the steps for Windows.
In Internet Explorer, open Tools (Alt+X) and select the menu option "Manage add-ons". Make sure "Adobe PDF Reader" is enabled. If it is already enabled, then toggle it to disable and back to enable.
I checked the "manage add-ons" and my Adobe Acrobat was enabled. Will it not work with the full program of Acrobat or do I have to have Adobe reader installed. As soon as I insert the file, it opens in Adobe Acrobat. However, in Filemaker there is no indication that I have any content in my container field. Nor can I view the file again by trying to initiate it in Filemaker???????????
To add more confusion, I'm thinking about upgrading to Filemaker 15. I downloaded and installed it for a trial. Again, I created an interactive contained, but with the new version, it will not give me the option of inserting a PDF file and I made sure I did format the field correctly in my layout view???????????????????
Since you initially didn't mention what operating system nor version of FileMaker Pro, let me gather some basics.
What version of FileMaker Pro do you currently have?
What version of Windows are you using?
What version of Internet Explorer are you using?
Did you disable and enable Adobe Acrobat in the Internet Explorer Tools -> Manage add-ons?
In the Interactive Container field, did you enable the option "Start playback automatically"?
If you create a new database file with a Container field set for Interactive content, are you able to insert a PDF?
I appreciate your time. Not sure why, but as soon as I installed adobe reader, everything works fine in both version 14 and 15. Perhaps Adobe Acrobat 8 is too old???????????
Thanks again, I think I'm good now.
I am running Windows 7, FileMaker Pro Advanced 14.0.5,
Internet Explorer 11.0.9600.18376,
Adobe Acrobat Pro X version 10.0.0,
Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.12
I am having the exact same experience as the original post, and haven't been able to make it work like I think it ought to.
I have the container field, set to Interactive, NO auto-playback.
If I right click the container field, and select Insert PDF, then go slect one ti insert, it immediately opens the pdf in a separate window in Acrobat Pro X (not Reader). If I close it, It doesn't seem to be inside the container field anymore. It's like the insert process never completes.
I'd really like to know what's going on, and what I should do.
I went to Internet Explorer>Internet Options> Manage Add-Ons, under the heading "Adobe Systems, Incorporated"- I have:
What should I enable/disable?
Disable all of them to start. Then, only enable Adobe PDF. Relaunch FileMaker Pro, open the file, put your cursor in the Container field and insert a PDF. If this works, then enable the others again.
Unfortunately having only the one enabled didn't work. It still opens the pdf in a new window in Adobe Acrobat Pro X.
And, if I try to drag a pdf into the field, it immediately opens in the native program again, and on top of that, if I close Adobe, the file doesn't copy into the container field, like it never happened.
Uninstall Adobe Acrobat Pro X, or move the application to a flash drive. Relaunch FileMaker Pro and insert again. Since Adobe Acrobat Pro X isn't available, either the PDF will display or Adobe Reader will become active. If the latter, then uninstall and reinstall Acrobat Reader again.
Uninstall Adobe Acrobat Pro X? This is necessary software for our business in the creation, editing and manipulation of all sorts of pdf needs. This isn't really a feasible option.
My apologies for not making myself clear. Something in your system is causing Windows WebKit to launch Adobe Acrobat Pro X, so my goal is to find out what it is. Once the cause is found, then Adobe Acrobat Pro X can be reinstalled.
By initially uninstalling Adobe Acrobat X, Windows WebKit will be unable to launch Adobe Acrobat when inserting a PDF into an interactive Container field. If no other application loads (e.g., Adobe Reader), then this action might reset the WebKit. At the point when no application loads, reinstall Adobe Acrobat X. If the issue returns, then make sure all the settings in Internet Explorer > Internet Options > Manage Add-Ons have all Adobe PDF settings disabled.
If the issue still occurs, create a new Windows user account, login to the new user account, launch FileMaker Pro, open the file and try to insert a PDF into the Container field. If this works, then something in the original Windows account is causing the issue. However, that is another option that can be looked at later.
Thanks for the thorough explanation. I'll try to work through this asap.
