Under WIndows 10 trying to print a pdf now freezes our filemaker solution.
Are you using passwords when saving PDFs?
If you run FileMaker Pro Advanced and follow each step of your script step by step, is it at the script step Save to PDF that FileMaker freeze?
The print window opens but I am unable to select a printer, and the only way to close the print window is to close FileMaker.
These are pdf files that are saved in container field, I can save them to the desktop and then print, but not from within the container field.
Now you are talking about two separate things
1. Saving a PDF is first thing
2. Print the PDF is another thing
1. If you have them in a container field you can not print them from within FileMaker. You then have to export them to some destination + automatically open them and then from within Acrobat PDF print your PDF
2. To just print any FileMaker layout you just enter Preview mode and hit Print button or you have a script that does that for your
I'm working from a Mac right now, I'll go back to the Windows machine and review the steps that cause the freeze.
On the Mac we open the pdf in Preview then print.
I apologize for the confusion in my original post, second hand info isn't always best.
Ok here's what is occurring, on a Mac there is no option to try and print the pdf in a container field. However in Windows Adobe Reader DC shows print as an option, and this is where the freeze occurs.
I have been using Macs for years and only received a Windows machine to use for troubleshooting yesterday so I am less familiar with those habits.
I need to find a way to have Adobe be less interactive with the container fields.
If you open up the PDF on Mac, do you open the file or just look at the layout in preview-mode before you print?
If you want to print a PDF that you store in a FileMaker container-field I would create a script that
Set variable $File ; filewin/filemac : TemporararyFolder & file name
Export Field content (and open directly)
That will open your PDF in Acrobat and from there you can print with ctrl/cmd+P . The file will automatically be deleted when user close there FMP
Thank you, I'll try that.
I can not duplicate your results.
The menu that appears inside the container field is Adobe, not FM. Same menu appears when you are viewing the PDF in a web browser.
I hover the mouse over the container field then a menu bar appears, with a save and print icon. I click the printer icon, then a print dialog box appears. (This is not a FM print dialog box) I can change printers, print pdf, or cancel.
Test using Windows 10, FMPA15
I would remove and reinstall Adobe, make sure your printer is installed and working correctly on the Windows 10 computer.
I am using FMPA 14.06
This is repeatable on four different Windows 10 machines
Just like you described above "I hover the mouse over the container field then a menu bar appears, with a save and print icon. I click the printer icon, then a print dialog box appears. (This is not a FM print dialog box). Only I cannot select any options within the print dialog box; cannot select pages, change printers, select paper size, etc. And the only way to get out of this window is to select the FileMaker window close icon which is behind the printer dialog window. Once FM is closed I can the close the printer dialog window.
Are you referring to the OS dialog for printing? That has nothing to do with FileMaker. Maybe you need to update your printer files
Yes it is the OS Print Dialog Window. All current printer files. Plus the fact that it is repeatable on three different machines with different printers selected, I find it hard to believe it is not a FMP/Windows 10 related issue.
Maybe you should send to Product Issues to see if FileMaker can help you out. Sounds more like a bug

The first Computer I tested had full version of Acrobat DC and performed correctly. I tested on another Windows 10 computer that only had the Acrobat Reader DC and I was able to duplicate your results. I don't believe this is a FM issue but a Adobe Reader issue. It appears that Abode Reader is not waiting for the print job to complete and is returning control back to FM. I will test some different setting in Adobe reader and let you know if I get it working.
Thank you, I will try Selecting Edge as the PDF reader and see if that changes.
I removed Adobe Reader DC, and tried just using Edge, that did not work.
Downloaded FoxIt Reader 8.0 and all the issues went away.
Thanks to everyones help finding the culprit, I need to pass this along to Adobe.
