    FileMaker Server 15 PSOS finding and exporting

    jerrysalem

      I have a system being hosted using FMS14.  I also have a duplicate database hosted for testing/exporting using FMS15. PSOS is much slower in my hands with FMS15.

      Both servers are physical boxes, with similar (maybe identical) specs (Cores, RAM HD Space, HD Space available)

      I also have a Server Side script that creates a found set, exports data to excel and emails it to a user.  (This is based on https://www.skeletonkey.com/restoring-filemaker-clients-found-set-within-server-side-script/).  The exports have a couple of related fields, but no unstirred calculations.

      Using FMS14 this has been working just fine.  Using FMS15 it has been significantly slower.

      As a test, I exported 13,000 records from both FMS14 and FMS15.

      Using FMS14, it takes about 10 Seconds to recreate the found set, then 70 Seconds to create the export.

      Using FMS15, it takes about 20 Seconds to recreate the (same) found set, then 175 Seconds to export the data.

      In another series of tests, this time exporting 30,000 records (more realistic in my scenario) I found;

      Using FMS14, it takes about 25 Seconds to recreate the found set, then 168 Seconds to create the export.  (2.5x longer to find/2x longer to export 3x records)

      Using FMS15, it takes about 90 Seconds to recreate the (same) found set, then 825 Seconds to export the data. 9x longer to find/11x longer to export 3x records)

      In the last series of tests, this time exporting 50,000 records I found;

      Using FMS15, it takes about 160 Seconds to recreate the (same) found set, then 1700 Seconds to export the data.(16x to find/24x to export 5x records)

      Any ideas?  Anyone see similar results with PSOS on FMS15?

      Again, the machines are identical, the databases are identical and the scripts are identical.  the only difference is FMS14 vs. FMS15.  I am also letting another user pull data using ODBC.  That has also gotten extremely slow using FMS15, but that is a discussion for another thread.  I am not using WebD on this server.  In general the FMS15 database performs find using FMP Clients.  But the FMS15 functions are not very impressive.  I am petrified to move my production database to FMS15, and even considering moving the test server back to FMS14.  Help!

      Sorry for the double post, I forgot about this space.

          Thank you for your post!

          Overall, FileMaker 15 Software is reported to be quicker than FileMaker 14. I downloaded the Demo you linked above and scripted an Export of over 100,000 records to a .XLSX file on the Server. My tests showed the FileMaker Server 15 did run slightly faster overall.

          Are you able to reproduce the additional slowness in a New File? Is there any further information I could use to reproduce?

            I know it is supposed to be faster

            I can try to repeat my findings in a new file.

            Any other suggestions will be helpful.

            Other info;

            the layouts involved all are using Themes (i.e. NOT Classic)

            no summary fields.

            the files are identical on the 14 and 15 server (they get copied over via a nightly script)

            if it turns out that the exports and scripts are faster in a fresh virgin file, what would be your suggestion?

            if it turns out that the exports and scripts are the SAME (i.e. slower in FMS15) what would buy your suggestion?

            TIA

              Then we have narrowed it down to a Solution Specific issue. We would want to exclude damaged as a possibility (newer versions tend to make damage more persistent). We can look at what in your solution 15 doesn't like. Might lead us to getting a copy or clone of your file if possible. If we do find an issue specific to 15 it can be reported for further review.

              if it turns out that the exports and scripts are the SAME (i.e. slower in FMS15) what would buy your suggestion?

              Then my test was missing something and we might try to get your test file and instructions to reproduce. From there it may be reported and reviewed further.

              You aren't using lots of un-stored calculations or working with Classic "Themes", which is great. Do you know what version of FileMaker this solution originated?

                I liked your suggestion to use the demo file.

                I uploaded it to both the FMS14 and FMS15 servers.

                It only addresses the find, not the exporting but good place to start.

                Also to compare to my earlier comment, I used a found set of 13k records.

                On the FMS14 box it took 0.015 Seconds to find those

                On the FMS15 box, it took 0.187 seconds

                That is 13x longer.  I did each measurement about 10 times it is reproducible in my hands.

                Can I send you a word doc for the dialog boxes also i attached the system specs for each computer.

                The 14 server has about 75 users, and the FMS15 has about 5.  How do I attach a file?

                  I sent you a private message. If I can get the demo file and your instructions it seems I should have no trouble reproducing the problem.
