What not just use "preview mode" ?
I get the response, but i don't want to leave the current layout, which would best be described as "Desktop" mode, and i want to be able to see what "Print" would look like without leaving the interface, or opening other windows, etc.
How about this:
You will have to do some exporting of the field contents to a temp path, then use that temp path to construct a URL.
This can be done as a script trigger on opening the popover.
Sorry this isn't helpful I went down the wrong path.
Id do another window and enter preview mode in that window if I needed this Use case to be done.
You could do the first technique, by going to the layout, exporting as a PDF into the temporary path and then showing that in the web viewer.
But as I've heard many times, this technique is 'over-engineered'. Its simplest to open a new window. You can make it look like a popover if that's the desired look. And you can close the preview window from the main layout.
You could create a new window, go to the print layout, preview - then simply close that extra window

I agree with Markus, I forgot to mention using a new window in my previous post.
The starter solution "Personnel Records" as a button on the main layout called "Printable View". The script that the button run is "Printable Personnel Record"
good example, schamblee!
