You may want to have the auto incrementing serial number and then a separate (Auto?) calculated field that adds the preceding zeros as needed.
Not sure how you are getting this far with a few leading zeros already and having problems with adding more.
There are many naming convention in FileMaker, but best is always to have one on your own and stick to it 100%. Numbers are treated as text in sort order in manage Field of your Database. I would most probably group my fields and have something like this if you like the number convention

I'd say the data is TEXT in which case they are sorted as words and not numbers. There is no easy solution because every time the number passes an order of 10 magnitude you'll need to add a zero to the existing records.
I'd suggest creating a number field (of type number) and use this for sorting.

That would be my assessment, too Vaughan. The "numbers" are really "text" to have a leading zero on them. When I need to sort, I use numbers that have nothing to do with the "text" that I want to show as if it were a number.
Thanks, that got that sorted.
New question coming.
I not sure how I got this far as well. It's called struggle street and I just stepped off the kerb.
