Hrmm ... If you're on Windows, I think you should paste your document into Notepad, which removes all formatting.
Copy and paste, in FM layout mode. Then select and format the parts as you want.
Sorry - I just don't trust pasting formatted text - it's iffy to me.

Try using Print Screen button and a paint program to capture and crop a screen shot of your word doc and then insert this image file into your layout as your background.
window grab should produce the correct file format, then copy and paste onto the layout background.
Not all image formats can be used as layout objects.
Be aware of the default print margins on the layout.
Lock the image once positioned
Don't forget header and footer real estate if involved
Do some initial testing on some top,bottom, left right elements to establish the print out lines up with the word print - if that is what you are wanting; I used to replicate paper forms in FileMaker...
What about saving the Word document as PDF and inserting it onto your layout as a background? Works for me on a Mac.
