If you go below the recommendation then you have to be careful obviously and set up some monitoring. Remember that FM keeps temp files up to the size of your files and keeps log files (which you can set to be huge,...). So there are a number of variables in play here that can make you run out of disk space more easily if you use a smaller root drive.
If you start running out of disk space (and one additional factor here is how much RAM you have) then you will start seeing a performance decrease.

and you need see how mich swap space Windows or Linux may need.
If you are low on memory and run out of swap space, your server will most likely crash.
