FileMaker Server 15.0.2: Unable to run progressive backups

    scottworld

      Hello,

We are running FileMaker Server 15.0.2 on OS X 10.11.6.

We have enabled progressive backups to an external drive which FileMaker Server has full read & write permissions to. We have checked the checkbox for Progressive Backups every 10 minutes, we have validated the path to the external drive, and we have saved our progressive backup settings.

It worked fine for about 60 minutes, and then it suddenly stopped working. Once it stopped working, we have never been able to get it working again... even after erasing the external drive. As soon as it stopped working, it wrote these 3 errors to the FMS log:

Server Events -- Error -- Event 783 -- Unable to create or write to backup folder "filemac:/FM Backup 4/Changes_FMS/". Progressive backup is disabled. (20402)

Server Events -- Information -- Event 775 -- Deleted all progressive backup folders in "filemac:/FM Backup 4/".

Server Events -- Information -- Event 938 -- SECURITY: Progressive downloading: Insecure

So we went into the progressive backup settings, unchecked the progressive backups checkbox, and saved our changes. Then, we went back into the progressive backup settings, rechecked the progressive backups checkbox, and IMMEDIATELY, as soon as we saved our progressive backup settings, FileMaker Server instantly wrote these 2 errors to the FMS log:

Server Events -- Information -- Event 779 -- Progressive backup is disabled.

Server Events -- Error -- Event 783 -- Unable to create or write to backup folder "filemac:/FM Backup 4/Changes_FMS/". Progressive backup is disabled. (20402)

We tried this multiple times in a row, and every time we tried to disable progressive backups and then re-enable them again, we get the exact same 2 errors written to the FMS log. The exact same 2 error messages, every single time.

FileMaker Server has full read & write permissions to the external drive, and it has full read & write permissions to the "Changes_FMS" folder as well.

So then, we took the extreme measure of completely erasing our external drive altogether. After completely erasing the drive, and after making sure that FMS has full access to the drive, we got the same exact 2 error messages again:

Server Events -- Information -- Event 779 -- Progressive backup is disabled.

Server Events -- Error -- Event 783 -- Unable to create or write to backup folder "filemac:/FM Backup 4/Changes_FMS/". Progressive backup is disabled. (20402)

And this is on a newly-erased drive that has nothing on it at all.

Is this a FileMaker Server problem? Or is it possible that we have a bad external drive?

      Thanks,

      Scott

          Update on this issue:

I disabled progressive backups, then completely restarted the Mac. After a restart, I re-enabled the progressive backups, and it seems to be working in the first few minutes. As soon as I re-enabled the progressive backups, I received these 2 messages in the log:

Server Events -- Information -- Event 938 -- SECURITY: Progressive downloading: Insecure

Server Events -- Information -- Event 778 -- Progressive backup is enabled with save interval of 10 minute(s) and backup folder set to "filemac:/FM Backup 4/".

So, we'll see how long this stays working for! Hopefully for a while.
