You can find, "For best performance, run FileMaker Server on a dedicated machine reserved for use as a database server..." under "Considering Performance" in the Getting Started Guide. Further information is available there.

yeah - the documentation is pretty clear-cut. As tsplatypus says, a dedicated machine, no indexing, virus-checking FM files, compression, auto-backups, etc.

I said "auto-backups" - that's fine within the context of FM Server backing up files, but no other way.

It's not just a matter of getting best performance. If you were to use one machine for two different purposes, any kind of crash or other issue created by one task affects both so if a problem with a printing task causes a crash, you might lose your database at the same time.
