well, if you have FMP Advanced, there's the Tools>Data Viewer. Otherwise, it's easy to set up a script with the Show Custom Dialog step ... just place your logic, within parentheses, in the Message section. When you run the script, you should see a message dialog with a 1 or a 0. (e.g. (table::numberField = 5) )
p.s. you don't need the parentheses ... I just tend to be more explicit than necessary.

To "assign variable and show it",
change your formula as
Let ( $$var = <<your formula>> ; $$var )
then tooltip calculation $$var on any layout object.
This should work only while debugging, so need some addition.
And you need take care of global variable name conflicting, it would occur easily on list view. So using $$var[Get(RecordID)] may be better.
