    Inserting .pdf from iPad

    DataWizard

Using FMGo 15 on the iPad, when a user inserts a .pdf file into a secure storage container field, it then cannot be opened from the iPad. The file does open from the computer. Here is the Get As Text for the container field. It seems to have an extra space before the : on the PDF file line:

remote:How to write an Order in FP.pdf

      size:792,612

      JPEG:Secure/44/D7/5BCC33E1/C7CBAE77/458C1D90/F655

      PDF :Secure/63/12/9DC27A80/5B6BD137/E4963E41/9845

      PNGf:Secure/55/9D/8EA90D0F/275D5C20/DBADA1A8/05D6

Other document types can be imported and viewed, but not the .pdf.

      Any suggestions?

          DataWizard:

          Thank you for your post.

I am unable to replicate the issue.  This is what I have done:

          1. Using FileMaker Pro Advanced 15.0.2 under macOS Sierra 10.12, I created a new database file with the following fields:

              Container [Container]

Calc [Calculation Text = GetAsText (Container) - Secure Storage using default relative folder setting ]

          2. In Layout Mode, I made the Container field a little larger and set for Interactive Content.

          3. I sized "Calc" to display a few lines and increased the width.

          4. I entered a few records, including a PDF file.

(I can verify that PDF has a space before the colon.)

          5. I turned on Network Sharing.

          6. On an iPad Pro, I launched FileMaker Go 15.0.2, tapped Host, selected the computer and opened the file.  The PDF file displays in FileMaker Go 15.0.2.

Let me know what I am doing differently than you so I can replicate the issue.

My apologies.  I forgot to include the remaining steps.

            7. For one record, I printed to PDF, saving to FileMaker Go workspace.

            8. I created a new record, and inserted into Container the recently saved PDF.

The next step would be on the recently saved .pdf that was inserted on the iPad, to see if you can save it out to the workspace. That is where the error is occurring, saying it cannot find the document.

                DataWizard:

I tap on the Container field displaying the PDF, and under the Actions window, I tap Export.  In the Export window, I keep the default name of the PDF and tap Continue.  Under the Select Destination window, I select Save to FileMaker Go.  When finished, I return to the Launch Center, tap Device, scroll to the bottom, and tap the PDF to open.

Are these steps the same steps you are taking?

Here are the step my client reports they take:

                  1. 1. Open PDF in FP
                  2. 2. Click top right and select “Copy to PDF Expert”
                  3. 3. I modified the file in PDF Expert
                  4. 4. Click top right and select “Open In…”, select Flattened Copy, “Import with FileMaker Go”
                  5. 5. In FP I click on the file, then on Replace
                  6. 6. I go to Files and look for the file
                  7. 7. Done

But If I try to open it the error comes up.

NOTE: But even if they don't modify the file in PDF Expert and just import a .pdf, they cannot open it on the iPad.

                    DataWizard:

How are you opening the PDF in FileMaker Pro?  In addition, "Copy to PDF Expert" is not a function of FileMaker Pro, so should I assume this is a button/script?

If you right-click the Container field and select Export Field Contents, and then import the file into another record using the same Container field, does that work?

                      DataWizard:

All image/PDF streams have four character codes associated with them.  For example, JPEG, PNGf.  PDF ends in a space, so that is the reason why there is a space preceding the colon for PDF in GetAsText.
