The virus most likely is the cause of your issue. The crypto-locker is tough to get rid of and can corrupt files. I would recommend installing a brand new hard drive in the effected computer, reinstall software (FMP), restore files from a backup prior to the virus infections.
Recover can be ran on the database to check for file corruption. Recover may or may not detect corruption.

The problem ended up being extremely long file names, like over 100 characters. The file names appeared to be message subjects or even the messages themselves.
Once the file names were shortened FMP stopped crashing.
