I am using a global field for entering my data, Can I do auto complete using existing values?
you can't use auto-complete with a global field (because there's always only one value), but you can create a value list of existing values of another field and use a pop-up or drop-down to choose from those.
You should take a gander at value lists: Defining a value list for data entry
It is the closest to auto-complete.
If the global field is a text field and is formatted with a drop down list of values. It can be set to auto-complete on the values from the value list. If the value list is based on a text field, that can be an auto-complete on all values in that field.
that's obscure - I changed the field my test value list was based on from a number field to a text field, and Bam!
Don't see anything obscure. It should work exactly as I described it.
Not sure if "Bam" means it worked for you or that it failed.
Auto-complete needs a source of text values with which to complete. We frequently complain about not being able to auto-complete because we are using a two field value list where the displayed values come from the second field. Then we can't auto-complete on the values from that second field. This often leads me to use other value list or other value selection techniques so that I can take advantage of auto-complete.
By "obscure", I just meant that it appears to be the one option out of many. And by Bam!, I meant the auto-complete box suddenly became available to check. I was channeling Emeril's enthusiasm.
Having binge watched "Top Chef" (where he appeared as a judge in the New Orleans season), I get it, (now...)
