I have a very simple Filemaker database which has a PDF in a container field.
I can not figure out how to open the pdf in Acrobat when the thumbnail is selected.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Right Click -> Export Field Contents
Thanks Mike, I'm using FM14 on a mac platform. Once I right click it only gives me a pop up window. See attached screen grab.
that looks more like an OPEN dialog, instead of Export Field Contents. You should see
"Export Field to File" as the title and the option to Automatically open file (After saving)
And this will open a copy of the file with whatever application is set up on the computer as the "default application" for the PDF file type. This may or may not be Acrobat.
The container field may be set as button "Open File..." but I wonder why the dialog has no title...
Is there a way to view the PDF without having to export it to a file?
"open file" cannot be used to open PDF's. It only opens FileMaker files. You'd need to use a different script step such as send event--which can execute an OS level command if you used that method.
PDF's may be viewed in a container field if:
Container field is optimized for interactive content.
File was inserted into this container using Insert PDF or (at least on macs) Insert Picture.
May prefer to open but not export, but by exporting the content of the container to the Temp folder, you may open the pdf in a web viewer. Or, You may also export to the Temp Folder, and auto-open. You can also have button near the Container. When button is clicked runs a script that opens a layout or a pop-up with the container in a larger size.
The attached file shows some options.
Thank you, rouelf, that's a neat file.
The files I want to house in FMP are housed on our shared drive, so the couple of people who need to view them already have access to them and in most cases won't need to export them. We are just using FMP to make sure the associated files (container fields) live with the contacts so we don't need to look multiple places to find everything related to that contact. Does that make sense? (I'm new here!)
Lena, not sure, I think you just want to view the pdf files. I have modified the file: Create_Insert_Open.
It now has a Popover button: Expand Container. In the Popover is a larger sized container So no exporting is performed. Note the container field has to be defined as Interactive Content. You may expand or contract the FM window and the container field will expand or contract. Works in OS X, Windows and FM Go.
Have also added a button to Get Temporary Path on the top Header. Hope this helps.
