There is no technical barrier to doing so.
How a lawyer would interpret the End User License Agreement is hard to tell in that situation but it seems to me that you can't call that non-functional install on your laptop a true "back up" install.

After following those instructions, my 4K laptop is so far running Filemaker OK again. Hopefully a proper fix will come out soon. Thanks for the good answers to the install issue earlier.
