FMP14 and above is supported on Windows 10.
No prior version are supported on Windows 10. Other users have stated that they have not had any issues running older version, but they are not supported.
supported: FMP 14v3 (FileMaker Pro operating system requirements - all versions | FileMaker )
"will function" --> you may get a lot of different answers here and it will depend wildly on the hardware and other software.
"should it?" --> no. Too old. FM6 was released in June 2002. That's more than 14 years ago. A totally different era in computer terms.
Just this week I installed FMP 11 on a Win10 laptop with no issues running the original Fmp11 installer, 11.3 updater, and compatible FMP data files. FMP had not previously been used on that machine. (Have not attempted older versions in a while.)
IF I read correctly, you upgraded an existing older Win version running fmp 6 to WIn 10. This means your installation was pre-existing and continued onward.
Next you tried to install fmp 6 on a new 10 machine. This didn't work. Sounds like the problem is with the installer not functioning or having built in the rule to ignore higher versions which it cannot recognize. Could also be incompatible software.
One shot in the dark would be to make a bit image of your older drive and try to copy that onto the newer machine. I don't know what the outcome would be except to overwrite the existing files. So, if you try this, backup first so you can reinstall if you want to.
You might also investigate cloning your drive onto an external drive, etc. You might be able to create a partition on newer machine and drop in your old drives clone on a partition. Or startup from that external drive and run off of it.
Just for the heck of it you might download a free 30 day demo of 15 and use it to open a copy of your file(s) and see what problems arise other than becoming obsessed with 15. This will keep you busy for 6 months to a year moving into the new world of 15.
Thanks for everyone's responses; they contain some good info and food for thought.
gofmp, your analysis of the sequence of my attempts to install v6.0 is correct. At this point I will try the 30 day trial of v15 to buy some time. One of the replies indicated v11 installed on a win10 computer. So will look for a pre-owned v11 or newer version. V15 is just too pricey for my level of use. Although, I have used FMP a lot of years and hate to give it up. Its been a good product. Many Thanks
It seems that people had problems even with Windows 7
The suggestion at that time was to install using a lower "Compatibility Mode"
> Just purchased a new computer with Win10. FMP6.0 will not load onto it.
SUCCESS! After several failed attempts FMP v6 just loaded onto my new win10 computer. Don't know what was different this time?? Could it be that I discovered Java app wasn't on the computer before. Or maybe it did load before and I didn't see the "finish dialog box since it was 99% off the screen----I was distracted by the progress bar being stuck on 80% complete and would not finish, Thanks for the many responses to my inquiry.
Good to hear you could get 6 to work. I would never work in it or develop with it, but it is good to know you can use it as a upgrade path to convert older version up to 6. Then you can convert to the *.fp7 that was supported up through FileMaker 11 which seems to work on Windows 10.
But as cautioned above, do not count on these being stable or always producing predictable results. I would only use them to help me in converting real old databases up to a *.fmp12 format.
While unsupported, it is good to hear from you that it will work and probably be useful for conversions!
FM6 just keeps going, and going

I was told FMI (and Apple also) is using EJ Technologies "install 4j" Install Builder for many years:
(maybe somebody can confirm)
If though, Java is required.
I would assume that even FMP 15 Installer would have failed without Java.
