I'm trying to do a bar chart of 14 items. I just got locked out after my 12th x-axis title. Is there a way to use more than 12 or am I stuck with that limitation?
Probably the max you can use. There are other charting tools out there. Some use java script in a web viewer and others use plug ins.
Do not use the filemaker charting. The Visual Basic Editor in Microsoft Word has more value for Word than this feature has for Filemaker.
Wasted CPU, wasted RAM, worst of all wasted time, both for the geniuses that coded it and for the hopeless FM users that try to use it.
I'm just reaching surface - frustrated again - from my nth try to get what I want from it after wasting 2 hours of life with no usable results, while a quick xmChart script solved it in 10 minutes. And I can tell you, that was my LAST try to use it.
In my experience, FileMaker Chart Objects work just fine and I haven't found them all that difficult to set up either. They are, however, limited and a few of the limitations are not obvious nor as well documented as I'd like.
So if you can stay within the limits, it's not bad (in my experience), but if you need more than it can provide, then it's time to use a plug in or Java Script in a Web Veiwer.
I feel you are doing different thing than what you want, since the limit of legends is data series for Y axis, not X.
This shows series has limit as 12 but X items can be 13 (or more, of course).
(I entered example data only series1,2,12)
Most of the requests we get are for pie charts, bar charts, column charts and line charts and the charting tool does that nicely. The limit on x series is not twelve, it is 2000 ( from memory ).
Admittedly, charting gets complicated quickly, but the built-in tool handles more than 90% of the requests we get. The clients that we have that need more than that are usually producing their own charts using dedicated maths/stats software.
I would guess that the original chart in question was a horizontal bar chart. That can make it easy to confuse whether we are talking about an X or a Y series of data points as the horizontal axis is now the Y-axis.
Sorry, yes, I meant Y-Axis data series for a Column chart. I miswrote as the data series shows up on the x-axis of the chart that I did not realize I had been entering into the y data series fields.
Also, how do I add the data series titles underneath each of their respective bars? I'm not sure what button to toggle. I can get the legend, but I tried putting in a delimited list into the X-axis data to do that, and that was a horrible mistake.
Aha, I made "Column chart" by default chart type and thought it as "Bar chart", I hadn't thought of English has completely deferent words for them.
The bar chart is exactly the same as a column chart only the x-axis and y-axis are switched.
I think this mean x-axis become vertical in bar chart, but FM "Chart set up" keep it horizontal and "switch" all contents of definition...
Sorry I can't get you yet now.
If you want to make 14 bars, you need 1 series and 14 data, FM can do it.
If you want to make 14 x n bars (Malcolm said n has limit 2000), you need plug-in or web viewer as already suggested. But I think this is not usual use of data series, it may be difficult to read.
