For reference: the most recent fmDotNet can be found on GitHub and is available as a NuGet package that can easily be added to any Visual Studio project.
fmDotNet is the equivalent of the PHP API but for .NET developers. It is very much alive and doing well.
And remember the raw data underneath is grabbed with XML calls.
CWP can use anything that can process the exchange. The fmDotNet & the FM API for PHP are just assemblages of functions that can help you process those XML calls. There are, of course, other APIs besides these two as well.
FMS can also send/receive via ODBC/JDBC for web publishing/data exchange, should you desire.
