Can't the same parent mouse be used in more than one cross? If so, it would seem that you need a join table between cross and mice tables.
In either case, performing a find should work, but Go To Related Records is simpler.
To diagnose why Find didn't work for you, we'd need to know how you tried to use it and how it failed.
Yes each parent can be used multiple times, but when they are put together for breeding they are assigned a unique cross ID that changes every time they are mated together. So each cross ID will belong to a male, a female and whatever pups they produce. That same male and female can go on to mate again and have more pups but they would have a different cross ID that associates them to the new pups.
Right now I have mice and crosses as 2 different tables but they are related through the cross ID field. How is a join table different from a relationship between the 2?
I've only used a find once before so I'm not very familiar with how it works, I tried to model this script after the other find script that I have that works. In the mouse inventory I have it set to list view so you can see all the mice at once. For each record I made a button called parents. When you click on the parents button next to a mouse I want it to take you to a record in a different table (crosses table) that has the same cross ID. Right now when you click on the button it takes you to the list of current crosses, but doesn't identify the septic cross that the mouse came from.
In the picture records converted is the mice table.
A join table allows you take a single mouse record and link it to more than one cross record while also taking that cross record and linking it to more than one mouse record.
Your current approach only allows recording the most recent cross at the expense of losing any record of previous crosses.
As as to your script, your steps are not in correct sequence. Set Variable needs to execute before you change layouts and before you enter Find Mode.
Okay, if I make a join table do I have to changes the tables that I'm currently using on my layouts (mice and crosses).
Would it be easier to use the approach you mentioned earlier? Go to Related Record?
You can change the find script as I described or use Go To Related Records.
But do give serious thought to the possible design change, even if only as a long term fix not to be pursued immediately. Your current approach seems far from ideal.
okay, I will definitely look into setting it up that way. For a temporary fix though, how can I use Go To Related Record? I have it set up like this but it doesn't do anything
Go to Related Record [From table: "Crosses" ; Using layout: "Cross Info" (Crosses)]
Make sure that you are on the layout for your Mouse table not crosses when you execute this step and you have to select the "match current record" option. That means "match the current record on your layout to the set of records in the other table (crosses) that match to it via this relationship."
Thank You so much for all of your help. I'm working on getting everything set up with the join table so that way I don't run into problems in the future. Thank God for pages like this that people actually post help on
