Change the calculation field into a number field. Give it an auto-enter field option that enters this calculation. You'll find that the calculation used for the calculation field type will automatically appear when you select the calculation option. Leave the "do not replace..." check box selected as you only want this value auto-entered when the record is first created.
You can now create a new record and then edit this field to enter a different year when the need arises.
Phil, I am not understanding what you are saying to do.
At present the Year field on my table is a number with an auto enter calculation which is year ( get ( CurrentDate)) however when I create a new entry it already puts 2017 into the year field just as it creates a new unique id. I then have to remember to change that year field. I want the year field to look at the date field and then enter the year that corresponds to the date chosen. I don't want to have to remember to edit the year field.

Then change the calculation to be Year ( yourDatefieldHere ) and then DO clear the "do not replace" check box. Or make it a calculation field with the above altered calculation.
That fixed it, thanks
