How does FMP authenticate against AD?

When I look at my logs, I have an enormous number of users who try and login with their whole email, instead of their username alone. These are accounts that are authenticating against AD and not local FMP accounts. So, if I try and login with "," it fails, but "waterstc" is successful.  Is this because of the way FMP uses AD, or is it due to the way AD has been configured at our University?

I see this as needing to be more user friendly- if persons can login to other University apps et al using either the email or the username, they get confused why it doesn't work to login to my web apps/databases.
