Custom solution icon gets removed when sent via email

I'm having an issue with a custom file icon apparently being removed when I email that file to someone else (or even myself).

I have a small FM file (a launcher/helper file) that I have added a custom file icon to in OS X.  I have also gone into the File Options -> Icon screen and changed the icon there to be the same icon.  This all works great on my own system.

When I attach this file to an email, the attachment graphic even uses the custom icon.  But as soon as I send the email the file on the other end does not have the custom icon anymore, just the default FM icon.  I have sent and received using Thunderbird, Mac Mail, and Google (web interface) and they all behave the same.  The icon in File Options -> Icon is also removed and has reverted to the custom FM icon.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the icon to stick?  I'd like for this file to live on the desktop or in the Dock or some such, and to have the custom icon visible.

Thanks,

Justin
