I should have been more clear. Unlike some past questions I could find on the forums, I don't need the output to be specifically html. A web interface just seemed like a way- maybe not the best way- to have this functionality.
The use of this database will replace faculty creating documents in MS Word, where they are used to an ability to easily add bulleted and numbered lists.

I have a simple trick for that. In my Globals table, I have several Global Text Fields where I in each field have the different type of symbolas that is not included in FileMaker natively.
Then I just create my own buttons that looks like your bullets and then when users clicks on it, I Copy from Global Text Field and Paste it into the Text Field where user want to work with bullets. You can use any kind of symbols with this trick
I think you were very clear, tc. I don't know if WD would work, but I had buttons that the user clicked (after a selection) that did Bold, Italic, numbered lists or bulleted lists, etc. It's some fancy scripting taking the "selection" and applying the necessary formatting to replace the "selection" with the formatted.
Some styling is not possible with WD, but I don't recall exactly what.
It would be good for FMPro, FMGo and Web Direct.
