That sort of effect is achieved in design programs (e.g. InDesign) using paragraph rules. I don't think it is achievable in FileMaker. Remember, it is fundamentally a database design program with limited text design features.
As for the text highlight colour, (1) I don't believe it can be altered, and (2) a little experimentation quickly shows that it ignores trailing spaces, including hard spaces.
wether this "label" is kind of text-object, merge-field OR regular field, you have all the graphic options with the Inspector.
For your example, this would be:
same grey color you used with your layout background
Also use Menu
Bring to Front
for those labels to have them on top of all other objects.
Thanks for your reply Benjamin. What you described is the method that I am already using. (See my screen capture example for the purchasing agent). This method is problematic for two reasons. It requires each field label to be manually adjusted to a specific width and more importantly, the font widths are not consistent across platforms.
If I could change the highlighting color my interface design would be viable for me to implement.
I see no other way to achieve this.
With current FM-Versions, you can save the "Style" (all objects attributes) for your Labels with your "Theme". All you have to do then is to assign your Style "Labels" to every new object.
Sad to say but you will always have to do adjustments with fonts for Mac and PC. Chances are that if it works for PC, it also works for Mac but not vice-versa. Win usually renders fonts wider and kind of unpredictable.
Set text align attributes for label as 'center' with this Style might work as a compromise for both systems, but as I said: Make sure it works for PC first.
