I was trying to change the name of a "Tab" and generally messing things up. Now the "Format" menu won't let me access "Tab Control Setup" and a bunch of other things.
OMG! What a dork I am! I had an overlap happening between two tabs and a portal. All that time I actually hadn't selected the stinking tab. Turns out, silly me, that unless you actually select the tab the "Tab Control Setup" isn't available. And, I started this looking for a way to Rename a Tab. "Rename" is not available until you make the change in the calculation screen thru "Specify." Thanks for your support with this though. I'm still "just getting started" and this turns out to have been nothing more than an abuser of your time. Onward and upward! And, Happy and Productive Filemaking.
Sounds like you have a modal dialog open--perhaps off screen where you can't see it.
There's a reset option in preferences if you need it.
The object is probably locked. Choose Arrange > Unlock.
Good thought on locked objects, but when I lock a tab control, the tab control set up is not greyed out. I can select it and then get a tab control dialog where I can't actually make any changes--that's pretty crummy design, but it's what I get in FMPA 15 on windows 10.
Reset didn't help. In fact DLarsen's suggestion is blocked too. "Arrange" has most of its options grayed out as well.
Is there possibly a script that is paused?
You have to restart FileMaker--which may require a force quit if you can't figure out what's locking you up.
I'd suggest a paused script, but not while you are in layout mode.
Could the database file itself (whatever.fmp12) have gone to read-only... at the OS level?
Not sure how to check its "read-only" status. I have exited FMP15 and restarted and I still have most of the menu options greyed out. I will try to restart Win 10 and see if that helps.
In windows, with the file closed, you can right click and select properties to see if the file is "read only".
But you get an error message type warning that the file is not modifiable when you open it if that's the issue.
Have you done anything to install a custom menu?
Checked read-only status and it's not. Don't think I did anything re: "custom menus". This is really nasty. None of the options under "format" are actually accessible. I can select the color for example, but the "palette" is empty. I'm almost tempted to re-install FMP15. But, I have to leave for a meeting, so... I REALLY appreciate the responses though and if you think of anything else, I'll try it when I get back. THANKS!
Before you reinstall, launch FM without opening this file. Create a brand new file and see if it has the same issue.
No worries! Welcome to the FileMaker Community!
Layouts can be very complex and it's wonderful that you actually found the answer. You can mark your own comment as the "Correct Answer", so others searching for the same question will quickly find it.
