Can we control the creation of jpg and png when storing PDF as picture?

We are creating a webDirect UI that allows users to load files, usually images, but some may be PDF. We want to be able to display the images after upload, so using insert as picture is preferable. When storing PDF as a picture in external containers I've noticed that a JPG and a PNG version of the PDF are created automatically.

Having the extra files isn't optimal, as we have an batch file run daily which creates a zipped archive. We would like to be able to grab everything in the daily container folder (because that is easy). Having to inspect the contents of the folder and remove things is more difficult.

Perhaps we can inspect the file extension, and if we find a PDF, reload it as a PDF.

Any suggestions?
