Thank you for your post!
We did have some update issues in early versions of FileMaker Pro 15 (mainly 15.0.1) that we recommended an uninstall and reinstall of the latest update for. Currently you would install FileMaker Pro 15.0.3 which will be available on your Electronic Software Download Page. If you are unable to find your software please Contact Support.
Looks like you're on a PC. We carried out various tests and managed to do manual updates in the early days of v15. In case it is of help the full posting is here:
Hope it helps
Thank you, Andy -- the article you steered me to at least shows me filename and location of the update file, which I found. However, I am unable to execute it -- my cursor hourglasses for about three seconds and then stops. Nothing loads into memory, according to Task Manager, and the update does not begin. This is irrespective of whether FMPA is running or not.
So I'm closer...but not there yet...

is the installer on the C: drive or some other drive ? If not on C:, try copying it on the C: drive (or whatever drive Windows boot from).
Hi, Planteg -- Yes, the installer is on my boot drive. I also tried moving it to my data drive, but no difference.
Sorry, I've been away for the day hence the delay in responding. It sounds like something is preventing the installer running rather than the installer failing during process. Have you disabled anti-virus software if it is loaded? We know that Sophos needs to be stopped when installing FileMaker Server. Also, have you tried right clicking and 'Run as Administrator'?
What do the Event Logs show after trying to run the updater?
All the best
