We are looking for somebody well versed in CWP. The solution has been built in FM, but we would like to publish it. Web Direct would be great however the licensing costs would be prohibitive. Thank you.
You should search for a FileMaker Business Partner in your area
FileMaker Consultants, Data Consultants, Database Consultants
Thanks for your input but the individual need not be in my area. We are willing to work remotely with the person. I should note that the DB is already created; t just needs to be CWP enabled.
Web projects (especially) need not be "local" unless it's also a training exercise or behind major firewalls.
It may be of advantage to reveal the OS of the server and version of FMServer. And/or if the web site is not on the same box as the database.
My guess is you mean 'FM API for PHP' for CWP, but there are many ways to web publish FM.
No, actually. It need not be PHP. Could be XML.
The FM API for PHP also uses XML, but is a specific set of classes (library of functions). Several other web apps that can interpret the XML can also be used. ODBC or JDBC can also be used for web publishing from FMS, if the web app can work with SQL calls.
I typically start my questions with:
1. what is your current web site using?
2. will the FMS CWP be connected to your website or merely be a link to it?
3. the server specs, the FMS specs, etc.
4. how many expected users?
Let's just have people contact you with Message (private) and ask what they will.
This is a totally simple solution at the point. At some point there maybe a shopping cart.
1. Not sure what you are asking but we have no website as of yet at all.
2. The solution would be a link to the website.
2. No server yet.
Continuing the conversation, I'm not asking just for you, but for all to know. I've made 100's of websites (of all sizes and complexities), with databases and without.
If you talk to a web developer, you should be asked for all your future hopes and dreams as well as now. It is vital to plan-for-expansion even when designing 'simple'.
Be aware that FM is likely moving away from supporting CWP. You have a few years, but you should be aware.
please define CWP, DJ? do you mean the FM API for PHP?
CWP = Custom Web Publishing (and there is more than one way now). If the data can be accessed (via REST? and/or something else), it's still web publishing (customized), right?
As far as I know CWP has not been deprecaded in 16. For sure the new Json API could change the game, but when is good question.
That' interesting to know. How did you get that info? On the other hand, they may simply make WD better. BUT, on the other hand, doing away with CWP means they can nail us for licensing with no other choice. That would be a death nail for them as far as any web app solutions would go, IMO.
What we have built on spec, is a pretty cool app that a marketing agency thinks will be successful. But if that is true, that means potentially 100 or more concurrent sessions. This is why WD is just not financially feasible, especially at this point.
It is still alive and kicking in FM16 for sure
It came up during the road map discussion.
CWP is a pretty specific term in Filemakerland. We'll be losing CWP's PHP API and maybe the XML one too (I don't use it so wasn't paying attention) in favor of the new REST API. Will there still be access to an FM file from the web? Sure. Will it involve the same PHP hooks and the same cost? Nope.
My guess is after the REST API trial works out some bugs, and FMI figures out the pricing, we'll see the CWP get deprecated. To me it's clear that FM sees a revenue generating opportunity here. No judgement, just an observation.

That's what I was thinking too. So much for FM as a tool for building the type of app w were thinking off. Licensing is fine with a few users but ....
Have a nice weekend and thanks for the heads up about CWP.
