Just wonder : is it possible to use external container storage in Filemaker Cloud ?
I believe so.
FM Cloud DOES NOT support external container storage. This does not seem to be well documented and it's a big deal depending on the solution. We hope moving forward a future version will support the current methodology integrated smartly with AWS storage. Stay tuned.
The behavior is similar to FM GO. When you upload it's supposed to bring the images back into the file where the reference resides. BTW, be careful about setting your EAR on the files. It seems there's some interaction with this action and how you specify external storage. Haven't had the chance to suss it all out.
This should be, IMO, included in the differences matrix and in the FM Cloud docs. Most of our solutions use external storage extensively and this is not a trivial issue when deciding whether to use FM Cloud at the moment. The rub is about portability. We often work on large systems with that run 24/7 with lots of users. Lean solution files are essential for updates and moving files to other volumes for back up.
On the other hand Amazon is backing up your files every 20 minutes and you can preserve them if you want. And the backups don't count to your storage until you preserve one.
It'a mixed bag.
Hope some of this helps.
Note that we provide virtual machines with full installs of FileMaker Server, without any of the hidden costs of AWS. Feel free to contact me off list at jmay(at)pointinspace.com for details.
