Most probably, the value is stored correct in the field. How the value appears on your layout can differ according to your setup with the Inspector.
- in Layout Mode, select the field
- set Inspector 'Data Formatting' either to "As entered" OR any specified format of your likings
This usually appears when the FM Field is set as of type "number"
Another question is: Do the Field Types match?
If value from Excel is of kind "Text", the FM Field should also be of Type "Text"
both Excel cell and FileMaker field are text.
just to cross this out:
Is the field of enough width to show the entire string? Sometimes, you can get some strange truncate effects.
nothing wrong with the field width ... even the Data Viewer shows 1.0e+28 instead of 10E0007 ...
You said that, DH, in the opening statement. Excel does its best to "guess" so even if you tell it something is "text", it really still thinks it's not text. Can you make a column in Excel and have it be quoted of the column you need? Yes, you need to convert back in FileMaker. But having had to mangle (oops, manage) data between FM & Excel (both directions) for a decade + , I've found that they both like to "guess" far too often for my displeasure.
I actually found 2 workarounds for this problem;
1- ad a '#' sign in front of the code and filter it out in FileMaker
2- export the Excel as tab/text and import the tab/text delimited file
FileMaker is so proud of being able to convert Excel to FM and use this in most of their demo's ... but this still haven't fixed this one :-(
Wow! Does save as CSV (from Excel) also have the problem? I usually find it's Excel doing its best to "help" me and is entirely unfriendly.
