One of the best design and performance tips I can give you for FileMaker WebDirect is to not have a gradient background.
The theme you use is important. And also the browser you use to test with, remember that FireFox is not supported.
That's really interesting and it'll give me a good experiment further down the track. In this instance, the WD interface would only be viewed behind the corp wall, but potentially over a long physical distance, and only ever by several people simultaneously. Further, the internal network is more robust than average. It would be quite easy to change the b/g grad to a flat, and get users in distant locales to report response time.
The other thing tho' is that the database is first and foremost for delivery of images; altho' those are optimised, I think they'll cause rather more traffic than the grad on the single form layout. Thus, the performance diff may be slight.
As for the key issue - the b/g not redrawing intermittently - any thoughts on that?
I'll do an experiment tomorrow changing from grad to flat b/g, and see if it has any effect on the redraw issue.
Custom theme and I can't remember its origins (sometime around v14) but not Classic. When we eventually get an FMS 16 prod server, Firefox will be a 'user training' issue as straw poll enquiries have revealed that quite a few users have that as their Windows default. Sigh.
But even a custom theme may have become "Classic" if it was converted from earlier versions. You might double-check the theme on several different layouts.
I had to revise several WD layouts because of this issue.

Ah! (augh!) Good to know - will check.
