I have an interesting idea that requires the ability to capture and generate 2 dimensional bar codes. Any idea if Filemaker can do this?
FileMaker can scan barcodes in FMGo. There is a list of recognixed barcodes.
You can generate barcodes with a plugin or using like the Google barcode API.
Which barcode type how are you trying to work with?
Wireless or USB barcode scanners are also supported.
There's a nice plugin for FileMaker Pro that is also an app for IOS:
Pro needs a scanner to read the barcode but GO has it built in.
Last I checked cns barcode for FMGo was out of date and may have issues on latest iOS version.
It is nice but you have to leave FMGo and then come back. I used it in v12 but not anymore.
Google barcode is quick and easy if you have a network connection. Works across all platforms. Also has options for damage resistant QR codes which not all online services or plugins give you.
If code 39 barcodes are enough for you, you can try out this little native filemaker trick
Works without any plug-ins or special fonts. I've been using this for several years now for student ID cards. All you need is 2 calculation fields and some conditional formatting.
Here's one of several FREE barcode fonts:

A barcode is little more (usually) that numbers being represented by vertical lines. Each number has its own one or two line or more graphic.
I use Barcode Creator from Geist Interactive: FileMaker Barcode Creator - No Plugins, No Fonts - Install in Seconds
It works very well and is very flexible, and it doesn't require installing any plugins, etc. It's just a series of scripts (one easy front-end script, then a bunch of complicated ones to do the heavy lifting)
Barcode creator is great.
Agreed! But Code 39 is basic enough to work perfectly with this method. It supports numbers and letter, it's free and quickly implemented. An no need to install a special font on all machines or deploy a plugin, and it works perfectly on iPad / iPhone (didn't try webdirect, but I don't see why it wouldn't work)
