Control protals with a drop-down calendar

Hi. I'm still something of a filemaker pro 15 Noob, and have very limited scripting abilities.

I'm trying to create a "page-a-day" diary type app (See layout below).

I want to have a drop down calendar control in the header, and when you change the date, it changes to contents of the portals showing notes, photos and to-do's.

I set it up with a date field in the main table, and the notes, photos and to-do's each stored in separate tables in many-to-one relationships with the date table.

I got it to work, kind of, but the main problem is the creation of duplicate dates. I really want to set it up so that when you click on the drop down calendar and click on a date it does a "if the selected date is not already present in the 'dates' table then create a new entry with that date, otherwise if it does already exist then go to that date record and don't create a new one".

I considered trying to use a date as a serial number, but that didn't seem to work.

Can anyone suggest how I might do this?
