Placeholder text formatting - Layout v. Browse

I was trying to get some nicely formatted Placeholder text on a container field, but wasn't having much luck.  When I see and edit the Placeholder text in Layout Mode, it actually looks like what I want to see.  But then when viewed in Browse mode, it bunches together and loses a good portion of it's formatting/spacing.

This is a container used as a drag-target for adding an image to the system.  I wanted some placeholder text in the middle to provide some guidance to the users.  Thus, I would like the text to be centered and kind of spread out vertically; the text I entered in the Placeholder-setting area in Inspector has a couple of blank lines in it to provide vertical spacing.

This looks just like I want it to while I am in Layout mode:

But then when I switch to browse mode it gets compacted and not-so-nice (it's still center-aligned at least):

I'd like to use 'Placeholder' text instead of a text-layout-object, just to keep things cleaner.  Has anyone had much luck doing this kind of formatting of the Placeholder text?

Thanks,

Justin
