I am BRAND new to this and so frustrated. How can I clear everything and start over? It seems like I delete layouts, but any I have ever made are still in the drop down.
Perhaps you'd be more comfortable in New to FileMaker ?
To see Layouts, use the File menu and choose Manange... Select the "Layouts" and you will see what exists in your database/file.
There are several good tutorials to help you get on the right foot:
FileMaker tutorials on how to create an app | FileMaker
If you delete the layout, it won't be in the layouts drop down in the status bar.
For those new to filemaker, there is often confusion over tables, table occurrences and layouts. When you add a new table to FileMaker, it creates a new table occurrence and a layout for you with exactly the same name. Even though they are named the same, these are three different objects. Deleting one does not necessarily delete one of the other identically named objects.
A table is found on the tables tab in Manage | Database. A Table Occurrence is a "box" in the relationships graph on the relationships tab. A layout is found outside of Manage |Database. The Manage | Layouts menu option that Beverly mentioned is one way to find and delete an entire layout. You can also delete a layout using "Delete Layout" from the Layouts menu if your window is in Layout mode.
Thank you Beverly. I do feel this is the right product to use and I realize there is a learning curve here. I'm taking some courses on lynda.com and will check out your link as well. Just getting all those layouts deleted is helping me feel more organized. I'm having trouble (probably because of relationships) getting portals and related fields to work properly - but I will continue learning more before posting more questions.
Again - many thanks!
I wanted to that you as well philmodjunk. Yes to the confusion around the tables, table occurrences and layouts - but I WILL get it. Your information helped greatly. I'm hoping I can select both responses as a 'Correct Answer' as both helped me.
Keep posting (as you learn). Posting to the New to FileMaker will give you less "noise" and step you as much as needed.
I guess only one is allowed. I hope folks who may have the same question read both!
Ok, I'll keep my questions there while I'm a newbie! Thank you again!
