Applescript - set variable to cell and preserve formatting

Using AppleScript, I'm wondering how to set a variable to a cell, while retaining the formatting of the cell text.  I have tried the following:

set ftnote to cell "Footnote" of current record

But the result does not retain the italicized text in the cell.

My goal is to copy a cell and paste it into MS Word as a footnote:

tell application "FileMaker Pro"

set ftnote to cell "Footnote" of current record

end tell

tell application "Microsoft Word"

set xfoot to (make new footnote at document 1)

set content of text object of xfoot to ftnote

end tell

Thanks -
