Problems with GoDaddy Wildcard

I just purchased a wild card SSL certificate from GoDaddy and installed it successfully or so I thought. When accessing the server I continue to get warnings about a server name mismatch.

To create the certificate I needed to add an ampisend and dot before the domain name - i.e. *.domain
That worked but then I encountered a problem that while I could issue and install the certificate it gives the mismatch error. In the help documentation it specifically says one should not use an *
Certificate filenames should not include unsupported characters. For example, a certificate filename should not include an asterisk (*) character.
Anybody else encounter this problem. Presumably it means that GoDaddy Wildcards are not suitable.
