I have an old FM database with over 20K records but never used customer IDs. If I import those records into a new file how can I automatically assign each record a customer ID
Immediately after importing, your imported records will form a found set. You can then use Replace Field Contents to give every record in that found set either a serial number or a UUID for it's primary key. You may have to temporarily modify field options to permit modification of this field.
You might also be able to just enable the option that enables auto-enter options during import, but since this allows auto-enter on every field in the target table, this has to be used only after checking to be sure that this won't have an undesirable effect on you imported data in other fields.
If you create an auto-enter ID Field in the new database, it will be updated upon import. Do this manually to see all the dialogs, especially the "Perform..." (to populate any auto-enters).

Here is how I solved the problem: I created a new field in my old database called Customer ID and chose "Number" as type, then under "Options" I selected Auto-Enter and Serial Number. I did not select "Prohibit modification of value during entry" I opened the DB and sorted the 24K records and went to the first record and placed # 1 into the Customer ID field., then under "Records chose "Replace Field Contents" and selected "replace with serial numbers." After completed I went back and changed the Auto-Enter to "Prohibit modification of value during data entry"
